Research in Interior and Architectural Design
Since 2003, I have been particularly pursuing research exploring the intersecting streams of
aural and visual perception in multi-principle design-works; as exhibited the works in the
series of ‘visualising sound’ in Melbourne, Osaka and Shanghai from 2003 and 2005. This
research was published as paper in the international design conference, named ‘Wonder
ground’ in Portugal, 2006. The principle area of my Ph.D. research interest has been the
application of statistics to architectural design by using non-linear structures based on digital
processes, which is one of the possible future directions in architectural design.
In my research, I also explore how mathematics can apply to architectural design by
developing definitions that lead to an experimental framework. Since the 1990s, architectural
design now inevitably involves non-linearity and informal form of space; therefore, the use of
non-linearity to enhance a conceptual and aesthetic point of view needs to be in
correspondence to its specific mechanics within both theoretical and experimental
frameworks.
Although the use of non-linear structures based on digital processes is one of the directions of
future architecture, its outcomes are still dependent on a subjective, personal aesthetics. In
fact, the current use of non-linear, informal structures in architectural environments is limited
through the unavailability of scientific design methods. Systematic design methodologies
constitute an un-theorised aspect of architecture, despite the fact that they are in increasing
demand.
This research consists of various explorations in architectural design, and also, the
development of methods in the design process that is based on mathematics. The endeavour
of the design research may produce certain sound visualization as architecture. Therefore
through my research I would like to endeavour to understand these visualisations in a logical
manner, engage with these, and use them in creative constructions.
The application of statistics visually manifests the movement of sound waves. Though
searching for underlying conceptual structures that correspond with current scientific thought
one might gain an understanding of past design solutions.
The final outcome of such experimentation and analysis will be a new form of “geometrical
design”, whose methodology will be more accountable to process and logic than past design
traditions. All these efforts will hopefully lead to a coherent interior architectural design
methods.
Translating stochastic theory principles to accommodate architectural design methods creates
both logical and scientific benefits. The definitions that my research has developed are within
the boundary of regular units of surface modification. Since mathematical design methods
have unlimited possibilities, the definitions considered here are important steps towards
guideline development. The question of whether there is a connection between mathematics
and architectural design developmental processes with regard to statistics may be a future
direction of this line of investigation. Such a discovery would deliver a significant structure for
guideline or principles for stochastic design methods in interior architecture.
